Earning your degree at a UK university is usually the first step towards a bright career. However, international student career development can be complex and getting the right guidance and advice to support you as you transition from university to the working world is essential. The career services at Liverpool John Moores University help graduates build a strong foundation for successful growth.

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) understands how vital career support can be and is pioneering new levels of guidance and career advice for their graduates. With a careers programme developed by leading businesses and FTSE 100 companies, it’s no surprise that 95% of students are in work or further study within six months of graduating (Graduate Outcomes Survey, published summer 2023).

Most excitingly, the LJMU careers advice services give graduates a lifetime of access, meaning they can reach out for career support at any stage of their career.

  • The Start-Up Hub is where you can learn more about starting your own business or freelancing through practical workshops, expert advice and networking opportunities.

Internships and placements

Internships and placements help you gain relevant experience while completing your degree, which is a big help with international student career development. That means you can start building your CV prior to graduating. LJMU’s strong connections to industry, both nationally and internationally, helps graduates secure placements and keep academic learning aligned with industry trends.

LJMU integrates work-based learning opportunities in a few different ways, depending on your chosen degree programme:

  • Placement years: Many programmes at LJMU offer year-long placements, allowing students to spend a full year in industry, gaining real-world experience while earning academic credit.
  • Work-based learning modules: Work-based learning modules allow students to work on industry projects and internships as part of their studies.
  • Paid internships and volunteering: LJMU also offers paid internship schemes and volunteering opportunities giving you flexible options to gain work experience alongside your studies, perhaps in an area you are interested in developing.
  • Graduate internships: The Graduate Internship Programme is designed to help recent graduates gain further work experience and boost their employability after completing their degree.

On-campus career support

As a student at LJMU you can access on-campus career support in your final year. This includes LJMU careers advice services that help you find work through job searching, alongside networking events, career development talks, workshops and recruitment fairs where you will meet top local and global employers looking for graduates with your skills. You can also access Unitemps, a service that places recent graduates in temporary roles to gain skills and boost future employability.
